"We are getting larger, stronger and better organized with every election cycle. Our success reflects the reality that citizens are getting fed up with the corporate takeover of our country and our government."

History of the Harris County Green Party

In 1999, a handful of Houston progressives founded the Harris County Green Party to provide a grassroots electoral alternative to a corrupt, corporatized two-party system. Led by its tireless first chair, David Cobb, the party was instrumental in establishing the Green Party of Texas and earning a ballot line for five candidates in the November 2000 election.

In two years, our membership has nearly quadrupled. We succeeded in preserving the Green Party's statewide ballot line for 2002 by earning more than 5 percent for a candidate in a statewide race. (Three of four statewide Green Party candidates handily beat the 5 percent mark.)

The HCGP was instrumental in helping to elect Ada Edwards to Houston City Council in 2001. We continue to push for social change that lifts all people.
