Cultivate Green

Presented by

A consortium of local volunteers and Houston Advanced Research Center

Presentations by:
David Hitchcock, AICP, MRCP – HARC Senior Research Scientist will discuss opportunities for to reforest Houston through emerging carbon sequestration and ecological service markets.

Wendee Holtcamp, M.S. – HARC Research Associate, and Freelance Science Writer will speak on the state of Houston’s urban forest: past present, and future.

Todd Watson, Ph.D., Texas A&M Professor of Forest Science will offer “concrete solutions” for urban trees, including porous pavement options.

Cultivate Green is pleased to offer area residents the opportunity to understand the state of Houston’s forests –the benefits the current trees provide to residents and businesses, what we have lost, a vision for a greener tomorrow and ideas on how to implement that vision. We will report on the recently released Texas Forest Service report, Houston’s Regional Forest: Structure, Function, Values, as well as a plan to Cool Houston through tree planting, and other “urban heat island” mitigation measures. The workshop will offer real solutions for paving and soil that work with urban trees, and will discuss which native trees provide maximum benefit for various ends: shade, fast growth, carbon storage and a vision for creating certified green nurseries that come equipped with this info at their fingertips. We will discuss the emerging U.S. market for tree planting and other ecological services, where citizens can benefit from having utility companies plant trees, which store and sequester carbon, to offset their CO2 emissions.
