Candidates for local 2003 races who have satisfied the Harris County
Green Screen
The following
people for office locally in 2003 sought and attained endorsement from
Harris County Green Party for their necessarily non-partisan candidacies.
Most appeared at our general membership meetings at one time or another.
They all spoke movingly about how they would move people's issues forward
at the city level. They have all answered questions from Green Party
members; their responses, presentations, and personal demeanor all converged
to result in our endorsement.

| Houston
City Controller: RUN-OFF;
trounced runner-up 2 to 1, but didn't get 50%+1. There were others
in the race, so don't take anything for GRANTed! |
Annise
Parker 713.807.9100
Annise
appeared on our TV show, and came to our Green Party Party the Saturday
before the runoff election. We share so many values and goals; lets'
work together! And remember what she said about needing to replace
her voice on city council: next item down.
SHE
WON THE RUNOFF HANDILY. YAY! |
| Houston
City Council, At Large Position 3: Great
challenge to well-known incumbent, 1 out of 5 votes |
Jolanda
Jones 713.661.9884 (a bit more, a testimonial
from a green volunteer) -- After the main election, Jo endorsed
Peter
Brown in the run-off; good decision. Too bad he's not
going to be in office. |
| Houston
City Council, At Large Position 4: Fine
showing against name recognition, well over 20% |
Sue
Lovell 713.523.1762 |
Houston
City Council, District A:
Dennis earned a respectable 5%
|
Dennis
Carter (A founding member of Harris County Green Party!
and past Treasurer) 713-695-7175

| Houston
City Council, District C: Very
nice challenge at about 20% in a large field |
Malaki
Sims 713.729.0122 (see also the results of this GOOGLE
search) |
| Houston
City Council, District D: UNOPPOSED
(our annointed! as Annise said on GreenWatchTV) would
you believer 100%? |
Ada
Edwards (Incumbent since 2001,
a great year for progressives in Houston! She put Harris County
Green Party on the map; during her campaign, we learned political
effectiveness and community building.) |

District II:
Iris captured better than 1 vote in 6. |

Mike
Gomez
713.649.7589
Mike
reminds that school is about kids, and will help with retention
rates and accountability and a whole host of other needed duties.
He had a good showing in the runoff election, getting nearly 4000
votes; his opponent got just over 4000, for a 48%-52% finish..

| HISD
District IV: RUN-OFF;
came in second out of a field of 5 with 20%;and see below. COALITION
TIME! |
Alice
Pradia
713.734.7565
Alice
gave the lead talk at the Green Party party the Saturday before
the runoff election. Her grassroots experience in the trenches as
an educator, and her continuing involvement with education for the
sake of the children and families is sorely needed, especially in
her part of town, where schools must be supported, not exported!
Unfortunately, the incumbent retained his seat, 41/59% He's only
been in office as long as anybody can remember. |
| HISD
District IV:
3rd of 5 with 13%; let's help combine this constituency with the
above, and a little bit more to win one for the people! |
Dr.
G. San Miguel, Jr. 713.553.3731
One
hopes that the 41% Alice Pradia got in the runoff includes most
if not all of the combination of her 20% + Guadalupe's 13%; it would
be nice to learn about the remainder. Coalitions must be nurtured. |
| HISD
District VIII:
Joe got a quarter of the vote! more than twice as many votes as
number 3 |
Joseph
Rodriguez 713.928.3250 |
NOTE
THAT TEXAS EDUCATION TAKES A FRONT ROW SEAT NATIONWIDE. THE BUSH LEAGUE'S
"NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" PROGRAM POINTS TO HOUSTON AND TEXAS
AS GOOD EXAMPLES. THE WORLD IS WATCHING. PARTLY FOR THIS REASON, BUT
MAINLY FOR THE SAKE OF OUR CHILDREN, HARRIS COUNTY GREEN PARTY CHOSE
THIS ELECTION CYCLE TO FOCUS STRONGLY AND PROACTIVELY ON SEVERAL SEATS
FOR THE HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS. WHILE
NONE OF OUR ENDORSED CANDIDATES WON, WE CANNOT HELP BUT BELIEVE THAT
THE ISSUES WERE RAISED AND PEOPLE NOTICED..

Hmm,
note BAND.
Our list is a subset of theirs; theirs is a subset of the entire list.
Except that only we seem to notice HISD... so far.
