2004 Candidates

The 2004 political season is upon us. Several people have filed to run for office and promote Green values. A good way to ease Your Self into running for office is to help these selfless Green candidates convince people to vote for them. We All need lots of help. Candidates will need Campaign Managers, Campaign Treasurers, and people to help with the enormous amount of legwork that goes into a campaign. As candidates declare and become official, we'll present their information and track their status here.

Cynthia McKinney and Ralph Nader have been mentioned as possible candidates, but neither seeks nomination. See Green Party USA for the most up to date details on the Green Presidential Race.

Since we're on the topic of candidates for president, even though the site linked here is a little out of date, it won't hurt to try www.ISwitched.org for fun, and practice with IRV!

Texas Statewide Offices
These are the offices in which we must achieve at least 5% of the general vote in at least one of the races in order to retain Green Party ballot access for the next two years -- assuming that we gather enough signatures between March 10 and May 24 (see PetitionDrive). The other six (non-Green) races can be seen HERE (judgeships; you must be an experienced lawyer to run).

Office Candidate(s)
Railroad Commissioner

Charles Mauch (GRN): LINK to the brand new animation for Charlie's 2004 campaign!

Texas Regional Offices
Seven Texas State Board of Education seats are up for election around Texas this year; two of them (Districts 6 & 7) include parts of Harris County. THIS LINK shows you names of people running.

SBOE seats are more important than you might think. These people have a surprisingly big say in choosing public schoolbook content for most of the kids on this continent. Think about it: conservative Texans editing Biology and Earth Science textbooks and choosing what parts of US History to teach and not teach.

Harris County Offices
(No Green Party candidates. Stay tuned for endorsements. See ALL OFFICES for and evolving list of other candidates.)

All 32 U. S. House of Representatives seats are up for election around the state this year. As we all must know, BOUNDARIES differ SIGNIFICANTLY from those of 2002. All courts have given the OK to the Texas Redistricting plan Hammered through the system. [Like a spike through the heart of democracy.] Even the US Supreme Court bowed out. See the new GIS maps at RedViewer courtesy Texas Secretary of State.)

Districts 8 and 22, listed below, are the only Harris County area US House seats with Green candidates (depending upon results at state conventions for full ratification, of course). See also GPTX State Candidates listings.

Office Candidate(s)

US House, District 8 (Hardin, Jasper, northern Liberty, Montgomery, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, southern Trinity, Tyler, and Walker counties; major changes.)
incumbent: Jim Turner (DEM)

 Hal J. Ridley, Jr. (GRN)

US House, District 22
(Redistricting seriously impacted this district. It now includes most of Fort Bend County, some of southeastern Harris County, part of Galveston County, and a tiny piece of northern Brazoria County, but none of Wharton County anymore.)
incumbent: Tom DeLay (REP)

Jean E. Zajicek (GRN)

15 of the seats in the Texas Senate
Note: As above for SBOE and certain other offices, no Greens this time. See OTHERS for a list of some of the other candidates seeking your vote. DITTO re how to return here!

All 150 seats in the Texas House of Representatives are up for election. Harris County includes districts 126 through 150, a total of 25 seats.
Note: only Harris County seats with potential Green Party candidates are listed. All candidates ultimately depend on final approval at state party conventions. (Contenders from other parties may be seen by going to this OTHER page of our site. But be ready to use BACK arrow to come back here. Green Party candidates await consensus at sate convention in June.)
