As you may know, we are in the last few days of collecting signatures for the two at-large candidates for Houston City Council we support so far to get them on the ballot without paying the $500 (each) filing fee. Pursuant to city rules, they (Don Cook and Deb Shafto) have to collect 587 signatures EACH - from voters registered at addresses within the city limits of Houston. We were able to collect approximately 110 signatures for each candidate last SATURDAY alone! That puts us within spitting distance of our goal... but we have just a day or two more to get those last signatures.

That's where you can help! If you (or someone you know) are registered to vote within the city of Houston, and you haven't signed the petition to get our candidates on the ballot, the easiest way for you to help is:

1. Print this petition right here: Petition_in_Lieu_of_Filing_Fee.pdf (Print two copies)

2. Sign them. (With date, printed name, address, and Voter Reg. No. &/or Date of Birth). Use two forms - one for Deb and one for Don; either you or we can fill in their Name-Address-Office Sought information as follows: Don Cook, 7954 Glenheath St., Houston, TX 77061, At Large Position 1, Houston City Council; Deb Shafto, 7260 Santa Fe Dr., Houston, TX 77061, At Large Position 4, Houston City Council.

If you have other household members at your address or have neighbors who are registered, it'd be A HUGE help if you'd get their signatures too! BUT - you do not have to fill up the entire petition form. If you only get one or two signatures, that's ok!

3. Get the forms to us on Tuesday evening at 7pm! We are hosting a Petition Gathering and Notarizing Party (sounds really fun, huh?) Tuesday at 7pm at Cherie Gorman's home, located at 2224 North Boulevard, Houston TX 77098. If you can, bring your forms there. If for some reason you can't make it but you have petition signatures -- CALL Don! (713-705-5594) Someone will come retrieve them.

It's THAT easy!

We are working hard and long in these last few days before the filing deadline of Sept 2 (this Wednesday!) at 5pm to collect the required number of signatures to get on the ballot without having to pay the $500 (each) filing fee. Like Don says, the candidates want to use the tools of DEMOcracy and not PLUTOcracy in running this campaign; we don't have and would not accept the big warchests of the developers and industry bigwigs who love to buy city government! That means we have to rely on our supporters for every dime, and the fewer times we have to ask yall for help, the happier we ALL will be, right?
